Terbinafine Hydrochloride is a potent allylic amine antifungal agent primarily used to treat dermatophyte infections of the skin and nails. It works by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase, a key step in fungal sterol biosynthesis; this leads to a deficiency in ergosterol and an intracellular accumulation of squalene, which causes fungal cell death. Available in both topical and oral formulations, it is highly effective against conditions such as Tinea pedis (athlete's foot), Tinea corporis (ringworm), and onychomycosis. While generally well-tolerated, oral administration requires monitoring for potential side effects, including gastrointestinal upset, taste disturbances, and, rarely, hepatotoxicity.
