Indications: Ipec-Plus is indicated for the treatment and prevention of deficiencies of iron, folic acid, and zinc.
Composition: Each film-coated tablet contains Iron (III) Hydroxide Polymaltose Complex equivalent to approximately 47–48 mg elemental iron, Folic Acid 0.5 mg, and Zinc Sulfate Monohydrate equivalent to 22.5 mg elemental zinc.
Pharmacology: Ipec-Plus is a combined preparation of iron, folic acid, and zinc. Iron is present as Iron (III) Hydroxide Polymaltose Complex, a stable non-ionic ferric iron formulation that allows controlled absorption through the intestinal mucosa and provides better gastrointestinal tolerability compared to conventional iron salts. Folic acid supports proper fetal growth and red blood cell formation, while zinc plays an important role in enzyme activity and protein metabolism.
Dosage & Administration: The usual dose is one tablet daily. In severe deficiency states, two tablets daily may be required or as directed by the physician.
Interaction: Due to the stable complex form of iron, significant ionic interactions with food components such as phytates, oxalates, and tannins are less likely. Interactions with medications like tetracyclines and antacids are also reduced compared to conventional iron preparations.
Contraindications: Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the formulation.
Side Effects: Generally well tolerated. Rarely, gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Iron supplementation during the first trimester of pregnancy should only be used when there is confirmed evidence of iron deficiency. Use during pregnancy and lactation should follow medical advice.
Precautions & Warnings: Dark discoloration of stool may occur during treatment, which is harmless and clinically insignificant.
Overdose Effects: No cases of iron intoxication or iron overload have been reported with overdose of this preparation.
