Ferric citrate is an iron-based compound that serves a dual purpose in clinical medicine, primarily utilized in the management of chronic kidney disease (CKD). When taken orally with meals, it functions effectively as a phosphate binder; the ferric iron binds to dietary phosphate in the GI tract, forming insoluble complexes that are excreted in the feces, thereby helping to control hyperphosphatemia. Simultaneously, a portion of the iron is absorbed into the systemic circulation, making it an effective treatment for iron deficiency anemia in non-dialysis-dependent CKD patients by increasing serum ferritin levels and transferrin saturation.
