Famotidine is a potent, competitive histamine H2-receptor antagonist primarily used to treat and prevent gastrointestinal conditions such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and pathological hypersecretory conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. By selectively blocking the H2 receptors located on the parietal cells of the stomach, it effectively inhibits both basal and stimulated gastric acid secretion, as well as reducing the total volume and pepsin content of gastric juice. Compared to earlier agents in its class, famotidine is highly potent and has a longer duration of action, often providing relief for up to 12 hours with a single dose.
