Augment contains the combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid, which is a potent broad-spectrum antibacterial agent used to treat a wide variety of infections, including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin. Amoxicillin, a semi-synthetic penicillin, works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis; however, it is susceptible to degradation by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by resistant bacteria. Clavulanic Acid acts as a "suicide inhibitor," binding irreversibly to these beta-lactamases to protect the amoxicillin from enzymatic destruction. This synergy effectively restores the activity of amoxicillin against penicillin-resistant strains, such as Haemophilus influenzae and Staphylococcus aureus. While generally well-tolerated, the combination is most commonly associated with gastrointestinal side effects, such as diarrhea, and its use is contraindicated in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to $\beta$-lactam antibiotics.
