Tenoxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class, primarily indicated for the management of painful and inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. It exerts its therapeutic effect by inhibiting the cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby reducing the biosynthesis of prostaglandins that mediate pain, fever, and inflammation. A key pharmacokinetic feature of tenoxicam is its remarkably long elimination half-life (approximately 70 hours), which allows for convenient once-daily dosing and ensures stable plasma concentrations throughout the day. In addition to its anti-inflammatory properties, it has been shown to inhibit several lymphocyte and neutrophil functions, further contributing to its efficacy in chronic joint diseases. Like other NSAIDs, it should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration possible to minimize the risk of gastrointestinal irritation, renal impairment, and cardiovascular events.
