Product Description
Obeliva contains obeticholic acid, which is a semi-synthetic bile acid analogue that acts as a highly potent and selective agonist of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), a nuclear receptor primarily expressed in the liver and intestines. By activating FXR, the medication suppresses the endogenous synthesis of bile acids and enhances their clearance, thereby reducing the hepatic accumulation of toxic bile acids that contribute to liver damage. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) in patients who have an inadequate response to ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) or as monotherapy in those unable to tolerate UDCA. Clinically, its use requires careful monitoring for dose-dependent pruritus (itching) and potential lipid profile changes, and it is generally contraindicated in patients with advanced or decompensated cirrhosis due to the risk of hepatotoxicity.
